National Hire a Veteran Day highlights the lasting value Veterans bring to the civilian workforce. Their leadership, adaptability, resilience, and commitment to service strengthen organizations long after military service ends.
When military service ends, leadership doesn’t. Neither do resilience, accountability, or the ability to perform under pressure.
In recognition of National Hire a Veteran Day on July 25, we spoke with TriWest Healthcare Alliance (TriWest) Senior Recruiter Stephanie Everson about why military experience continues to create exceptional leaders long after the uniform comes off. We also learned why employers who invest in Veterans strengthen their organizations.
Leadership Beyond the Uniform
Transferable Skills,
Lasting Impact“When organizations take the time to understand a Veteran’s experience, they often discover candidates who are exceptionally qualified and capable of making an immediate impact.”
Coming from a family with relatives who have served in nearly every branch of the U.S. Armed Forces, Everson has both a personal appreciation for military service and a professional passion for helping Veterans transition into meaningful civilian careers.
Veterans develop resilience, discipline, teamwork, sound judgment, and a commitment to excellence while serving something larger than themselves. Those qualities don’t end when military service does.
According to Everson, one of the greatest misconceptions is that military experience applies only to military-related careers. Veterans routinely succeed in healthcare, technology, logistics, customer service, operations, administration, project management, and leadership because the skills they developed while in service are needed across every industry.
Helping Veterans Navigate the Next Chapter
Everson encourages transitioning Service members to focus on the story behind their service. It could be leading people, overcoming challenges, managing projects, and achieving results. Once translated into civilian language, those experiences become powerful assets in the job market.
She has also witnessed countless Veterans gain confidence after realizing just how prepared they already were for successful civilian careers.
Why Hiring Veterans Matters
National Hire a Veteran Day is an opportunity to celebrate more than military service. It is a reminder that Veterans continue making meaningful contributions in workplaces and communities across the country.
Leadership, resilience, accountability, and service are qualities every organization needs. Investing in Veterans means investing in people whose commitment to excellence continues long after their military service ends.
